Metaphore
🌳 The metaphor of the tree and words
A story goes that a father observed how his son reacted angrily to any setback. One day he decided to teach him a lesson about the impact we have on people with our words.
The father took his son to the garden next to a large tree, handed him a bag of nails, and said, “Every time you lose your patience, hurt someone with your words, or act impulsively, drive a nail into the trunk of this tree.”
The first days the boy hammered many nails. More than he imagined. But over time he began to control his emotions better and needed less and less. When he finally went several days without nailing any, he proudly told his father. Then his father said to him, “Now, for every day that you act with respect and self-control, remove one of the nails.”
Weeks passed and, little by little, they all disappeared.
The father took him back to the tree and asked, “What do you see?”
The boy replied, “There are no nails left.” The father smiled and added, “It’s true. But look at the marks that have been left on the trunk. The tree will continue to grow, but it will never be exactly the same again.”
People are very similar to that tree. Our words have the power to help, inspire, and grow those around us. But they can also hurt, demotivate or leave scars that remain long after having asked for forgiveness. A negative experience has seven times more impact than a negative one.
Therefore, before speaking, it is worth stopping for a few seconds and asking ourselves:
🌱 What do I really want to achieve?
🌱 How can I get what I want and at the same time make a positive impact on the other person?
Because nails can be removed. But the marks they leave on the tree will stay with us forever.
Let’s watch our words. They are the tools with which we help grow… or leave scars.
